More than 1,000 police officers thought to be members of the group blamed for last year's defeated coup in Turkey have been remanded in custody, Ankara prosecutors announced Friday.
The officers had been arrested on April 26 in operations targeting Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO) police infiltration in all 81 of Turkey's provinces.
Of the 1,336 suspects detained in April, 1,063 of them were remanded Friday, said the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office in the capital Ankara.
According to the government, FETO and its U.S.-based leader Fetullah Gulen orchestrated last July's attempted coup, which resulted in 249 deaths.
Ankara has said FETO is behind a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police, and judiciary.
Since the defeated coup, operations have targeted FETO suspects in these three areas, as well as other institutions.
