Djibouti's president, Ismail Omar Guelleh, was awarded an honorary doctorate by Turkey's Ankara Yildirim Beyazit University (AYBU) on Wednesday.

Addressing a ceremony at the university's Etlik campus, Guelleh said cooperation between universities in Turkey and Djibouti was growing every day.

At least 520 Djiboutian students are currently enrolled in Turkish universities, the president said, adding 13 of those were studying at the AYBU.

"When I consider the politicians who have been awarded this title before me, I feel even more honored," he said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was also awarded an honorary doctorate by AYBU in 2015.

The university rector, Metin Dogan, said AYBU was not only honoring the Djibouti president but also "a strong politician and a person who has dedicated his life to the freedom and prosperity of his people".

The AYBU is a state university established in 2010.
