UN conference pledges $2.4 bn to avoid Horn of Africa famine
The sum is considerably less than the $7 billion the UN says is needed for the Horn of Africa, but the world body's humanitarian agency OCHA said in a statement that "famine has been averted."

A United Nations-backed conference in New York Wednesday raised $2.4 billion to provide life-saving assistance for millions of people suffering from drought across Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia.
The sum is considerably less than the $7 billion the UN says is needed for the Horn of Africa, but the world body's humanitarian agency OCHA said in a statement that "famine has been averted."
