An explosion rocked a weapons depot in northwestern Libya on Friday evening, with local media reporting that ammunition and rockets were propelled into surrounding areas.

The blast occurred at a depot at the headquarters of the Al-I'sar Battalion in the Al-Ghiran area, south of Misrata, according to Libyan news outlets Al-Marsad, Libya Press and Alwasat.

Al-Marsad published footage it said showed flames and continuing explosions inside the ammunition depot, with projectiles reportedly landing in nearby areas.

Libya Press, citing witnesses, said a powerful explosion struck the depot, sending shells and rockets flying from the facility.

Alwasat quoted local sources as saying the depot belonged to the Al-I'sar Battalion and was located near Al-Sakt prison.

No official statement was immediately issued on the cause of the explosion or whether there were any casualties or material damage.

Anadolu could not independently verify the footage or reports of ammunition and rockets being propelled from the depot.
