North Korea has fired an unidentified ballistic missile into the East Sea, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said Monday.

The JCS is currently analyzing details such as the missile's type, trajectory and flight distance, the Korea JoongAng Daily reported.

This marks North Korea's first ballistic missile launch of the year.

The launch occurred roughly two weeks before US President-elect Donald Trump takes office on Jan. 20.
