Libya’s High State Council calls for severing ties with Israel's backers amid Gaza onslaught

Libya's High Council of State on Thursday called for the severing of relations with countries that support Israel's bombardment and blockade of the Gaza Strip.

In a statement, the Tripoli-based assembly, which acts as a senate, also called for halting oil exports to backers of the Israeli offensive and boycotting their products.

It did not, however, name any specific countries.

The assembly "reiterates support of the Libyan people for their brothers in Palestine until liberating their land from the brutal Israeli occupation," the statement said.

It also noted that the lawmakers discussed ways to deliver emergency humanitarian and relief aid to Palestinians in Gaza during an extraordinary session held in Tripoli.

On Wednesday, the Libyan Parliament called for halting oil exports to countries supporting the Israeli airstrikes on Gaza.

Israel has launched a relentless bombardment campaign on the Gaza Strip following a cross-border attack by Hamas into Israeli territory on Oct. 7.

Over 8,400 people have been killed in the conflict, including at least 7,028 Palestinians and 1,400 Israelis.

Gaza's 2.3 million residents have been running out of food, water, medicine, and fuel, and aid convoys allowed into Gaza have carried only a fraction of what is needed.
