Chancellor Olaf Scholz called for good relations between Germany and Türkiye ahead of his talks with visiting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

"The citizens of Germany and Türkiye are connected in many ways," Scholz said at a joint press conference.

Scholz was hosting Erdoğan for a dinner in the Chancellery, and was set to cover topics including Sweden's accession to NATO, which is currently being debated in the Turkish parliament. Türkiye's approval is necessary for Sweden to be accepted as a NATO member. "We hope for a positive decision soon," said Scholz.

Germany and Türkiye share the goal of wanting to limit irregular migration, according to Scholz, who called the 2016 refugee deal between the EU and Türkiye a "good agreement." "I am campaigning in the EU for this to be continued," he added. The two are also due to discuss repatriations.

Commenting on relations between the EU and Türkiye, he said that they had fallen short of their potential in recent years.
