The flies that get mature in the Kura River and look like butterflies, realized their annual "death flight" in the city. Millions of mayflies gathered around the lightning post, making for interesting sceneries.
Sibel Kaya, an expert on the issue, said that after leaving the water for pairing, mayflies take a shape of a butterfly and then live between 2-15 hours, 1 day at the most.
"Female flies leave around 40 thousand larvas to the water and then die. Their life cycle continues like this," she added.
Tarık YIldırım, a citizen, said that the mayflies 'dance' under the lights, adding that the area that is covered with snow in the winter gets covered with flies in the summer.
"It is a beautiful view and the flies are dancing under the lights."
