Magnitude 6.6 earthquake strikes South Shetland Islands off Antarctica

A 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck the South Shetland Islands near the Antarctic Peninsula, according to the United States Geological Survey.

A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck the South Shetland Islands late Thursday.

The quake hit the group of islands located around 120 kilometers (75 miles) north of the Antarctic Peninsula at 0022GMT at a depth of 4.9 kilometers (3 miles), the US Geological Survey said.

No tsunami warning or threat has been issued and there are no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

Chile's earthquake agency reported the earthquake as having a magnitude of 6.5.
