Israeli court to resume Raed Salah’s trial on July 23

An Israeli court in the northern city of Haifa will resume the trial of Palestinian resistance icon, Sheikh Raed Salah, on July 23, according to his lawyer.

"The magistrate court will hold a hearing on July 23 to hear witnesses for the prosecution regarding charges against Salah," lawyer Khaled Zbarqa told Anadolu Agency on Monday.

Last week, the same court ordered Salah's conditional release on house arrest in Kafr Kanna, an Arab town in northern Israel, after an 11-month detention.

Zbarqa said the new hearing will not affect Salah's conditional release "until the completion of judicial proceedings".

In March, the magistrate court preliminarily approved Salah's conditional release, but the decision was overturned following an appeal lodged by the public prosecutor's office.

The conditions imposed on Salah's release include a ban on entering his hometown of Umm al-Fahm in northern Israel, along with additional restrictions on his movement.

Last summer, Israeli police arrested Salah, the leader of the Islamic Movement in Israel, before convicting him of "inciting violence" and throwing him into solitary confinement.

In February, a court in the southern city of Beersheba slapped the prominent resistance icon with a further six months in isolation.
