At least 16 people were killed and 40 others injured on Saturday in an Iranian attack on a camp of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (IKDP) in northern Iraq, according to a party member.

Speaking to reporters, IKDP Council member Kamal Karimi said the attack occurred at noon and was done with some missiles targeting the IKDP political bureau and around it.

Karimi said 16 IKDP members had been killed in the attack while 40 people were injured.

Earlier, an Iraqi official said on condition of anonymity that Iranian drones struck a meeting of leading members of the Iranian opposition party in the town of Koy Sanjag in northern Iraq, killing 12 and leaving more than 30 others injured.

Party Secretary-General Mustafa Mawludi was reportedly among those injured in the attack.

Karimi said the health condition of Mawludi was good.

The injured were transferred to hospitals in Erbil for treatment.

Iraq's former Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) President and leader of Kurdistan Democratic Party Masood Barzani condemned the attack in a written statement.

Barzani said the region had some problems and threats; he called on all sides for a "peaceful resolution of the problems".

Meanwhile, Iranian state TV aired a video showing the attack on the party's building, saying it was carried out by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Established in 1996, the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan has been operating in Erbil.
