The National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces on Monday accepted the resignation of Jawad Abu Hatab, president of Syria's opposition-led interim government.
Following its 44th general assembly, the coalition -- an umbrella of Syrian opposition groups -- issued a statement confirming Abu Hatab's resignation.
"The resignation of Interim Government President Jawad Abu Hatab was discussed at the general assembly," the statement read.
"Given the harsh working conditions he faced, Abu Hatab's resignation was accepted following a vote," it added.
Coalition President Abdul Rahman Mustafa told Anadolu Agency that Abu Hatab had first tendered his resignation application on Jan. 25.
"But due to the current rules, his resignation could only be accepted by the general assembly," Mustafa said.
He added: "So his resignation was accepted at the [general assembly] session and a new president will be selected at the next assembly in May."
Abu Hatab was elected president of Syria's opposition-led interim government at a general assembly session in May of 2016.
Syria's interim government was established on March 18, 2013 under the auspices of the national coalition. It is currently headquartered in Syria's northwestern city of Azaz.
