Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the country's current restrictions will be tightened up to a "full lockdown" for two weeks beginning on Friday, in the face of soaring COVID-19 numbers.

Netanyahu made the announcement via a video message as the government convened to discuss the new restrictions to be added to the current ones which have been in place since Friday, when Israel entered its second lockdown.

The exact nature of the tightened up lockdown measures has not yet been announced.

A new record of coronavirus infections confirmed in a single day was reported Wednesday by the Health Ministry, when 6,923 new cases recorded the day before.
