2nd Palestinian detainee dies in Israeli prison in less than 24 hours: Prisoner groups

A second Palestinian detainee died in an Israeli prison on Tuesday in less than 24 hours, two prisoner groups said.

Arafat Yasser Hemdan, 25, died in Ofer prison in the West Bank, the Commission of Detainees' Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoner's Society said in a joint statement.

According to the statement, Hemdan, from the town of Bayt Sira in Ramallah, was arrested by Israeli forces in an Israeli military raid on Oct. 22.

The statement did not provide details about the circumstances leading to the detainee's death.

"The occupation (forces) have started a systematic assassination operation against our captives as part of widespread aggression against our people," the statement said.

There was no comment from the Israeli prison authorities on the detainee's death.

On Monday, Palestinian detainee Omar Daraghmeh, 58, died in an Israeli prison. The Israeli Prison Service said the prisoner died after "feeling unwell and going to the prison clinic for tests."

The Israeli army launched a mass arrest campaign in the occupied West Bank, detaining more than 1,265 Palestinians since Oct. 7, according to the Palestinian Prisoner's Society.

The arrest campaign came amid relentless airstrikes on the Gaza Strip following a cross-border attack by Hamas into Israeli territory.

More than 7,100 people have been killed in the Gaza conflict, including at least 5,791 Palestinians and 1,400 Israelis.
