Turkey aims to win up to 20 medals at the 29th Summer Universiade to be held in August in Taiwan, head of Turkish University Sports Federation said Wednesday.
"We are hopeful. We expect [to win] 15-20 medals at the multi-sport global event to be held between August 19 and 30 in capital Taipei," Kemal Tamer told Anadolu Agency.
A total of 88 Turkish athletes will be competing in nine disciplines including archery, athletics, fencing, artistic gymnastics, judo, swimming, taekwando, weightlifting and wushu, Tamer said.
He pointed out that Turkey in particular aimed to get its first medal in swimming in the history of the games.
The 12-day event will involve more than 7,700 student athletes from 153 countries, competing in 21 sports at 38 competition venues in Taipei and other neighboring cities.
The name for the international sporting and cultural festival, "Universiade", is derived from the words "University" and "Olympiade".
The Universiade is also known as the World University Games and staged every two years in a different city across the world.
