Turkish Greco-Roman wrestler Metehan Başar wins gold in 2017 Paris World Championships

Metehan Başar, a Turkish Greco-Roman wrestler, got his first gold medal late Monday in Paris.

Competing in the 2017 Paris World Championships, the wrestler defeated his contenders in the 85 kg division.

2017 has been a bright year for Turkish wrestling.

Turkey won in total five gold medals, one silver and three bronze medals at the recent 2017 European Wrestling Championships in Serbia, marking the country's second biggest achievement in the sport since 1949. Başar won the silver medal in the tournament.

He also won the silver medal in the 85 kg event at the 2007 Black Sea Games held in Trabzon, Turkey. The wrestler also became the bronze medalist at the 2015 European Games held in Baku, Azerbaijan.

In the European competition, Turkey ranked 3rd as a team in the freestyle category, 4th in Greco-Roman category and 8th in women's wrestling.

Turkey had come back from the 1949 European Wrestling Championships in Istanbul with six gold, one silver and one bronze medals.
