Magnitude 5.2 earthquake jolts western Turkey

A strong magnitude 5.2 earthquake shook the Marmaris district in Turkey's southern Muğla province Sunday, according to Turkey's Disaster & Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).

The quake struck at 8.43 p.m. (local time) and was quite deep, measuring at a depth of 61.41 km below the seabed, AFAD said.

It was felt in Izmir and surrounding provinces.

Turkey is among the world's most seismically active countries as it is situated on a number of active fault lines, with the most potentially devastating one being the Northern Anatolia Fault (NAF), where the Anatolian and Eurasian plates meet.
