7.5-magnitude earthquake strikes Papua New Guinea

An earthquake of magnitude 7.5 struck Papua New Guinea on Sunday, the U.S. Geological Survey said, but no tsunami warning was issued.

The quake hit a central region of the country's main island of New Guinea at a depth of 35 kilometers.

About a half an hour later a second earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 in the same area with a depth of 39 kilometers.

There were no immediate reports of damage.

The Geological Survey website had 19 reports of feeling the quake, including some saying the shaking was violent.

Papua New Guinea sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for seismic upheavals and volcanic eruptions.
