A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck in the sea 124 km (75 miles) north-northeast of the holiday island of Lombok, Indonesia, on Sunday at a very shallow depth of 1 km, the United States Geological Survey said.

The 7.2 magnitude quake struck at a relatively shallow depth of 20 kilometres (12.5 miles) and about five kilometres south of Belanting town in East Lombok, according to the US Geological Survey. No tsunami warning has been issued.

Indonesia sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for frequent volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.

An earthquake hit Lombok Island on August 5, leaving 460 people dead, nearly 7,800 people injured and more than 417,000 displaced. The damage from that disaster is expected to exceed 500 million dollars, according to Indonesia's disaster management agency.
