AK Party to dismiss member attacking CHP head over violence

A suspect, identified only by his initials O.S., was arrested with other partners in crime in Sivrihisar in central Anatolia for attacking CHP chairman Kılıçdaroğlu last Sunday. The AK Party later identified him as Osman Sarıgün and said he was a party member who would face expulsion. "AK Party is against any form of violence... There is no room for violence in democratic politics," AK Party spokesman Ömer Çelik said on Twitter.

Turkey's ruling party said Monday that its member arrested for attacking the main opposition party leader will be dismissed.

Osman Sarıgün and five other people allegedly attacked Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu of the Republican People's Party (CHP) on Sunday when he was attending a Turkish soldier's funeral.

After the attack, Kılıçdaroğlu was taken to a nearby house until an armored vehicle was sent to pick him up under protection of the security forces.

Ömer Çelik, spokesman of the Justice and Development (AK) Party, said in a tweet: "The AK Party is against all forms of violence. Our principles strongly reject violence. There is no room for violence in democratic politics."

Sarıgün was arrested earlier on Monday in Sivrihisar district of Ankara, prosecutors office said.

Five other suspects are at the Çubuk District Gendarmerie Command in Ankara for interrogation, it added.
