UN chief concerned by recent escalation in the Gulf, says world cannot afford another Gulf
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said Friday the "world cannot afford" another Gulf war, following the killing of Iran's top military commander by a US strike. "The secretary-general has consistently advocated for de-escalation in the Gulf. This is a moment in which leaders must exercise maximum restraint. The world cannot afford another war in the Gulf," a spokesman for Guterres said in a statement.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is deeply concerned by the recent rise in tensions in the Middle East, where the United States killed top Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani following violent protests at its embassy in Baghdad.
"The Secretary-General has consistently advocated for de-escalation in the Gulf. He is deeply concerned with the recent escalation," said his spokesman, Farhan Haq, in a statement. "This is a moment in which leaders must exercise maximum restraint. The world cannot afford another war in the Gulf."
The United States announced early Friday that it had killed Qasem Soleimani, the commander of the Iranian Quds Force, in a strike on Baghdad's international airport.
U.S. President Donald Trump says Soleimani was "plotting to kill" many Americans. Iran's supreme leader has vowed "harsh retaliation."
