Nigeria announced on Monday that secondary schools in the country, which are shut due to the coronavirus pandemic, will reopen next month.

"Secondary schools in the country are to reopen as from the 4th of August, 2020 for exit classes only," the Federal Ministry of Education said in a statement.

Students will have two weeks to prepare for the West African Examination due to start on Aug. 17, it added.

An exit examination is a test that students must pass to graduate from school.

The West African country has registered 40,532 virus cases, including 858 deaths and 17,374 recoveries, thus far.

The government eased virus restrictions on June 30 by permitting inter-state travel. Domestic flights resumed a week later. It also allowed places of worship to reopen.
