Ankara hits out at EU for surrendering to interests of some of bloc members

The European Union's draft statement regarding the imposition of sanctions on Turkey is disappointing, the Turkish presidential spokesman said on Wednesday, adding that sanctions will not work and will be counterproductive in the long run.
Delivering a speech via video conference at a German Marshall Fund of the United States event, Ibrahim Kalın said that Turkey wanted to achieve a positive atmosphere with the EU but that the bloc was surrendering to the interests of some of its members.
The United States penalising Turkey for its purchase of Russian S-400 missile defence systems would be "so counter-productive" and would harm Turkish-U.S. ties, Erdoğan aide also said in a statement.
Kalın said Turkey believed it can have a good, positive agenda with the administration of U.S. President-elect Joe Biden.
