Japan PM Suga declares state of COVID-19 emergency in Tokyo

Japan's government on Thursday announced a new virus state of emergency stretching throughout the Tokyo Olympics, as reports said organisers could bar fans from almost all events at the Games.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga formally declared on Thursday a state of emergency in Tokyo, putting restrictions aimed at curbing coronavirus infections in place through August 22.

"We will impose the state of emergency in Tokyo. The period will be until August 22," Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said at a government meeting on infection measures.
