Singapore sees highest pandemic numbers since last year's lockdown

Singapore's daily coronavirus case numbers this week hit numbers not seen since midway through a sole pandemic lockdown more than a year ago.
The 910 new cases reported for Thursday by the wealthy city-state's Health Ministry marked the highest one-day tally since May 1, 2020.
Singapore had until recently avoided the worst of Delta variant-driven uptick seen elsewhere in the region, with only 38 new cases reported by the ministry on August 17.
The virus-related death toll remains one of the world's lowest, at 59, and around 82 per cent of adults have received two vaccine doses.
Around 98 per cent of new cases reported over the past month have displayed mild symptoms or none, according to the Health Ministry.
The government has earlier said it would base pandemic restrictions on numbers of people ill rather than on the daily case count.
But with case numbers on the rise, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Friday received a third booster shot and exhorted Singaporeans to "please take it" when their turn comes.
