Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin said on Saturday that he gave order to turn back because of the risk of blood being spilled.
Speaking in an audio message, he said that they will be returning their convoys to bases to avoid bloodshed.
There were earlier reports of several thousand Wagner forces moving towards Moscow.
