"The close cooperation between Chile and the UN is helping to strengthen key areas of our work on the climate crisis, sustainable development, peace and security," the Secretary General wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Boric posted a photo of the two of them on X saying: "Not only is Antarctica home to 90% of the planet's ice and 77% of available fresh water: its seas are key in regulating the global climate."
Chile's presidential office announced on X that Chile seeks to position itself as a leader in scientific research in Antarctica and drive forward developments in the fight against climate change.
Guterres wanted to visit two glaciers and Copaitic Island, among other places, the United Nations had announced in New York.
He will report on his experiences in the Antarctic at the COP28 World Climate Conference in Dubai next week and "call for action appropriate to the crisis we face."
