Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke Monday with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz about strengthening cooperation between their two countries in defense, security, energy and artificial intelligence.
"Over the past year, the two countries have signed agreements on AI, quantum, and battery technologies, launched the Sovereign Technology Alliance, and secured more than six new critical minerals partnerships," Carney's office said in a statement.
Last month, the leaders launched negotiations toward a Canada-Germany Strategic Partnership Agreement which is intended to deepen cooperation in areas including defense and security, emerging technologies, supply chains and raw materials, energy and space.
The talks followed the leaders' participation in a meeting of the "Coalition of the Willing," where they reaffirmed their support for Ukraine and stressed the need to maintain pressure on Russia in pursuit of a just and lasting peace.
Carney and Merz agreed to remain in close contact, the statement added.
