Architecture in Karoo is characterized by single-story buildings with wooden shutters, verandas, courtyards, flat roofs, and white-painted stone dwellings. Due to their historical significance, several Karoo structures have been designated national monuments. Graaff-Reinet, the largest and oldest community in Karoo, is South Africa's city where the most national monuments are found.
