Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Güler, the President of the Kızılırmak Delta Wetland and Bird Paradise Area, stated that the delta is located within the Kızılırmak Basin, one of Türkiye's 26 river basins.
Güler explained that the natural conditions forming the delta and coastlines on the west and east sides of the Kızılırmak Delta led to the emergence of lakes of varying sizes. "On the east coast of the Kızılırmak Delta, there are 10 lakes, while on the west coast, there are 2 lakes.
The delta is characterized by alluvial soils formed by the accumulation of materials eroded by rivers, especially in areas with gravel, sand, silt, clay, and very low slopes. The delta plain rises in steps after a wide alluvial plain," Güler said.
Emphasizing the biodiversity of the delta, which hosts many bird species, Güler stated, "It is known that there are 500 bird species in Türkiye. The Kızılırmak Delta is an extremely important area in terms of bird presence. A total of 365 bird species have been identified in the area so far, which corresponds to approximately 75% of the bird species in Türkiye. The Kızılırmak Delta holds a significant position for the breeding, wintering, and migration of birds. The delta has a very special place in terms of the bird species and densities detected in the region it represents."
