War and Political Detainees Since the beginning of the civil war, Sednaya has served as a key site for imprisoning opponents of the regime and those who opposed the war. After 2011, as protests and uprisings surged, particularly for democratic reforms, thousands of people were arrested and sent to Sednaya. Many of these detainees faced severe torture and forced disappearances for participating in anti-regime protests.
