The enlargement period of NATO since 1949

Since 1949, NATO's membership has increased from 12 to 30 countries through 8 rounds of enlargement.

The accession of the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland on March 12, 1999 took the number of members to 19. The fifth enlargement process took place in 2004, with the membership of Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia. The entry of Albania and Croatia in 2009 and Montenegro in 2017 was recorded as the 7th and 8th expansion wave. The last enlargement was in 2020 with the accession of North Macedonia.
