Real Madrid from Spain defeated Germany's Bayern Munich 2-1 in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semifinal in Munich late Wednesday.
Bayern Munich's German right-back Joshua Kimmich scored the opener.
Brazilian left back Marcelo and Spanish midfielder Marco Asensio scored for Madrid.
The 2-1 loss was Bayern Munich's first defeat on their home ground this season.
"We can be happy with the result. We suffered a bit without the ball but we were good with it. Winning here isn't easy," Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane said.
"We want to do whatever it takes to put this result right next week. It's our duty. The semifinals are two legs so we need to see what happens after two games. We didn't deserve to lose today, so I'm confident," said Bayern Munich manager Jupp Heynckes after the defeat.
The second leg between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich will be played on May 1 at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid.
Liverpool stepping towards final
On Tuesday, Liverpool defeated their Italian opponents Roma 5-2 in the first leg of the Champions League semis in England.
Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino were each scored twice for Liverpool. Senegalese winger Sadio Mane also contributed a goal.
Near the end of the game, Roma narrowed the gap thanks to goals from Bosnian striker Edin Dzeko and Argentine winger Diego Perotti.
The second leg will be held at Stadio Olimpico in Rome on May 2.
This year's Champions League final will be played in the Ukrainian capital Kiev on May 26.
