The Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls that connects the U.S. and Canada has been closed because of a deadly incident involving a vehicle crossing onto the American side, according to reports Wednesday.
Social media footage showed smoke and damage at the blast site.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said she is closely monitoring the situation.
"I've been briefed on the incident on the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls and we are closely monitoring the situation. State agencies are on site and ready to assist," she wrote on X.
The FBI said it is investigating a "vehicle explosion" at the bridge, the bureau said in a statement. "The FBI is coordinating with our local, state and federal law enforcement partners in this investigation. As this situation is very fluid, that's all we can say at this time."
According to sources cited by Fox News, the incident is being described as an "alleged terrorist attack." Sources further indicated that the vehicle involved had explosives inside, resulting in the deaths of two people in the car and injury to a border officer.
The remaining bridges connecting the countries -- Peace Bridge, Lewiston-Queenston Bridge and Whirlpool Bridge -- are also closed, according to police.
