Pizza and carbonara are American not Italian foods - historian

"When a community finds itself deprived of its sense of identity, because of whatever historical shock or fracture with its past, it invents traditions to act as founding myths. Italian cuisine really is more American than it is Italian," Food history professor Alberto Grandi stated in the interview.

Grandi explained his emotion around the controversy, saying part of the idea that Italians emigrated to the U.S. and taught people how to cook is offensive.
